In his role in the electric power industry, Gale Horst took on Technology Lead and Project Set Lead roles for a research area titled "Information and Communication Technologies for Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and Demand Response (DR)". A key goal and future state he initiated for this work includes a flexible distribution system architecture where DER can be included in a variety of system architectures including the enfolding of third party, customer-owned, and renewable energy resources.

Gale Horst was a Project Manager leading EPRI's 7-year Smart Grid Demonstration Initiative.  This was a collaborative research effort with 24 utilities focused on addressing prevalent challenges associated with integrating Distributed Energy Resources (DER) developing standards and methodologies for smart grid implementations.

Mr. Horst has been involved with smart grid technologies including demand management, appliances, consumer engagement, and standards development in several key roles. He developed the first grid-responsive appliance at Whirlpool Corporation in 2006.  Gale’s EPRI whitepaper titled Concepts to Enable Advancement of Distributed Energy Resources (EPRI Report 1020432) outlining the concept of the Virtual Top Node (VTN) and Virtual End Node (VEN) referenced in developing smart grid standards organizations such as OpenADR and CTA-2045.
