The New Town Cryers

IN MEMORIAM

Mike Gray, member of the original Town Cryers and our lifelong friend died unexpectedly on February 25th, 2006. Our sincere sympathy goes out to Mike's family at this sad time. In memory to Mike, the New Town Cryers will be dedicating their 2006 concerts to Mike's memory.

Riversong Music Society welcomed Tom Meldrim and Terry Morlock as active supporting members and performing musicians in 2004. Tom and Terry are instrumentalists, songwriters and vocalists who have resurrected the original Town Cryers after returning to Southwest Michigan. As the Town Cryers, Terry and Tom performed extensively in the Midwest during the folk revival of the 1960's and 70's. In the intervening years they performed on the east coast regularly appearing together and with other artists.

Tom and Terry draw on many of the same sources as the original Town Cryers to recreate their performances of forty years ago. Carl Sandberg's American Songbag, Tom Paxton, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and the Weavers are just a few of the sources for the music they mix with traditional and original material into their special brand of "vintage" folk music. In a tip of the hat to their old fans The New Town Cryer's motto is: "The Unforgettable Songs of a Whole Generation Who Can't Remember"

The original Town Cryers performed at many of the regional venues during the folk revival heyday of forty years ago. Many fans today can recall with nostalgia the days when they regularly appeared at places like the House of David in Benton Harbor, the Side Door in Kalamazoo, The Sleepy Hollow Barn Theater and Fidelman's Resort in South Haven, Smallbone's Resort at Sisters Lakes, Pennelwood Resort near Berrien Springs and the Potawatomi Inn at Pokagan State Park, Lake James, Indiana. The original Town Cryers also appeared at regional and state fairs, festivals and music competitions.

Terry and Tom currently perform as The New Town Cryers for the Riversong Music Society including the RMS sponsored "Live in Concert" series at the Box Factory for the Arts in St. Joseph, Michigan, as well as at other venues in the area. Their special brand of folk music combines tight harmonies accompanied by a variety of folk instruments.
